The 2018 Spring Racing Carnival is upon us and we at Red Rock Venues cannot wait for the spectacle that lies ahead. Over the coming three months Victoria will welcome the world’s finest horses, top trainers, and greatest jockeys to compete in Australia’s premier racing event. For sports fans, horse-racing aficionados, punters, jetsetters and trendsetters this may well be the pinnacle of sporting calendar.
The Spring Racing Carnival has accomplished something remarkable by creating an occasion that beautifully links racing, tourism, hospitality, accommodation, retail and culture. There is something for every person and business to celebrate and it is these deep ties that has made the event a spectator sensation and an economic powerhouse. Officially, the Spring Racing Carnival is the Australian thoroughbred horse racing series. It’s an annual event, stretching over 12 weeks, featuring a number of meetings hosted by different racing clubs at Melbourne’s metropolitan racecourses, as well as Geelong and Bendigo. The key events to be aware of are the Caulfield Carnival, Geelong Carnival, Moonee Valley Carnival, Bendigo Carnival, Melbourne Cup Carnival and to conclude the series the Sandown Carnival. While all of these meetings display outstanding racing and are a treat for any racing fan there is only one race that stops the nation, the Melbourne Cup!
The Melbourne Cup Carnival is the highlight of the series, held on the Flemington Racecourse, this event captures the attention of a global audiences and attendees. The race that everyone is focused on is the Melbourne Cup, the most prestigious annual sporting event on the Australian calendar and the richest handicap race in the world. The prize money for this 3,200 metre horse race will be the biggest pot ever in 2018 at $7.3 million. And according to the Victoria Racing Club, the 2017 Melbourne Cup Carnival over four days of racing at Flemington, injected a mammoth $444.5 million of gross economic benefits into the Victorian economy… now that is something everyone can celebrate!
Beyond the races the Cup is a spectacular event to witness. In the past, crowds of 110’000 plus, have attended the race and in response to this ever-growing popularity a limit was eventually placed on Flemington Racecourse. But for many horse racing is only part of the fun as attendees dress to impress. Some like to keep it traditional, elegant and chic while others look to push the boundaries and rock exotic outfits, this is high-end fashion stakes. Off the track there is plenty of food, drinks, music, and entertainment to look forward to. And no doubt there will be an international celebrity or two floating about the race track sipping champagne in style.
Emotions run high throughout the carnival, it is captivating, exhilarating, electric and always entertaining. This might explain why it captures imagination and attention of such a wide audience, domestic and international. The Spring Racing Carnival has become something of an international marvel for racing heavyweights and industry with an ever-growing global audience and broadcast into 163 territories worldwide. The 2017 edition recorded more than 20’000 international visitors converge on Flemington for Cup Week alone.
You do not need to attend the races to feel like you are amongst the action, as the city of Melbourne comes alive with visitors, events, parties and entertainment. The masses will flock around the Yarra while venues host racing functions, sweeps and parties.
